My journey to Onstage Synergy began in graduate school when suddenly, with the Alexander Technique newly added to my performance toolkit, all the acting techniques that had previously eluded me, began to work reliably! Ultimately, my joy in this discovery led me to the desire to teach this work. Performers of all kinds work so hard to do something they love - they deserve for that work to be as effective and empowering and fulfilling as it can be.
Integrative Alexander Technique Practice for Performing Artists: Onstage Synergy guides its readers through the processes that have emerged both from my experience onstage and in the rehearsal hall, and from over 30 years of teaching performing artists of all kinds. From the introduction:
The book is designed as a step-by-step guide. It can be a companion to Alexander Technique classes, workshops and lessons, or a guide to self-study. Resources for finding Alexander Technique teachers are offered in Appendix Two.
There are three sections: Section One is a performing artist-specific introduction to the Alexander Technique; Section Two maps the journey of performance using an Alexander Technique-informed approach to Performance Skills; Section Three weaves the threads together to create Onstage Synergy, providing a guide to integrating the Alexander Technique directly into your rehearsals and performances.
Each chapter includes Performance Practices for active learning. In addition, AT Rehearsals throughout the book offer sequential practice in integrating the Alexander Technique with performance-specific actions. Throughout the book, Performers’ Chronicles offer first person narratives of how artists have used this process. Integrative Alexander Technique is ultimately an invitation to artists to create their own personal pedagogy and a psychophysically- reasoned approach to mastery.
This book is for:
- Performing artists of all kinds.
- Alexander technique teachers –The book is a guide to integrating the Alexander Technique with the work of any performers studying with you. It also elucidates the ways and means of what is sometimes called ‘application work’, including non-performing-related tasks.
- Performing arts teachers: this book guides you through a process that enhances what you are teaching, explaining how the Alexander Technique relates to performance education.
- Everyone: If you substitute the stories, the needs, the tasks, the ideas of any discipline into the processes described throughout the book, it is useful for everyone.
The book, published by Intellect ltd., is due out in December 2014. It is currently available for pre-order through Amazon
